Backpacker Bars

Total Time: 40 mins Preparation Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 30 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, divided
  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups sliced almonds
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips or 1 cup regular size chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped raisins
  • 1 cup flaked coconut

Recipe

  • 1 set oven to 350°.
  • 2 grease a 13 x 9" baking pan.
  • 3 cream butter, with 1 cup brown sugar.
  • 4 stir in oats, wheat flour, flour, wheat germ and orange zest.
  • 5 press mixture into bottom of prepared baking pan.
  • 6 combine eggs, almonds, chocolate chips, raisins, coconut, and remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar; mix gently, but thoroughly.
  • 7 pour over butter mixture; spread evenly.
  • 8 bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • 9 cool before cutting into bars.
